Near fine/VG+. 254 pages , pictorial DJ over black hardcovers. Nice DJ's are not seen very often. No other early photographer succeeded as well as he in recording the daily life of the pioneer West. His finest work is a superb record of the early days of the open range. Endpapers are a map depicting "Ranches and Cattle Trails of Early Montana" including portions of WY and Dakota Territories as well as MT. # 13 of 100 Best Books About MT and # 25 Best Books About MT, 2001 edition. Huffman spent most of his career working out of the Miles City, Montana area.

VG+ 271 pages, pictorial green cloth hardcovers, much on the early history of the upper Missouri River including David Thompson, Lewis & Clark, fur trade, Blackfeet, Chief Joseph, John F. Stevens and the discovery of Marias Pass. Large folding map at the rear. An important book for the CMR collector as it contains 35 drawings by Russell & 21 half tones. See Yost and Renner page 20, # 40.

A novel set during that period of the "new deal" and the construction of Fort Peck dam in north central MT. # 42 Best Books About MT, 2001 edition.

Dakota Cowboy: My Life in the Old Days

Written by Ike Blasingame and Illustrated with line drawings by John Marinani. NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1958. First Edition 8vo -over 7 3/4" - 9 3/4" tall. Near Fine/VG+. 317 pages, illustrated DJ with spine slightly sunned over rust colored cloth hardcovers, map illustrated end papers showing "Dakota Reservation Range 1904"; The author was a young Texas cowboy when in 1904 the Matador Land and Cattle company of  Dundee, Scotland shipped 3,000 cattle from their Texas holdings to the Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Dakota and he went with them. He spent 8 years with the big herds there and saw up to 60,000 cattle on that range. Considered to be an excellent account that realistically covers the life of a cowboy dealing with the big herds, bad winters, cattle drives, big roundups, bronc busting, cowboy humor and camaraderie, etc. Touches on this time in MT and a couple years cowboying on the Matador holdings in Canada. In 1916 the Matador bought the Coburn Circle C Ranch by Fort Belknap Indian Reservation and the edge of the Little Rockies in MT. A good read with much of  interest.

Author was a noted historian and president of MSU in Bozeman, MT. Uncommon title.

Near Fine/VG+. 601 pages including bibliography and index; Bright and unfaded pictorial  DJ over black cloth hardcovers; #66 of 100 Best Books About MT; went up to # 47 Best Books About MT, 2001 Edition; Preface is a sketch of the author by Bernard Devoto. Howard's last work concentrated on the Metis, their origin, their struggles, and their legacy. They descended from French, English & Scotch frontiersmen and American Indians . Their impact in the mid to late nineteenth century on the history of the Great Plains west of the Red River in Canada and the US was significant but not much as been written about it, even now. Much on the plains Indians, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Montana and the Dakotas. Covers two rebellions, their leader Louis Riel and their struggles to establish their own empire in the heart of North America. Important Work.

Bright pictorial DJ with Spine a little lighter and small chip to head of spine couple closed tears that are hardly noticeable  over black cloth hardcovers. Huffman became known as the famous photographer from Miles City, MT whose photographs of the Northern Plains frontier are now considered as some of the best work of the period. Front end papers are map of Huffman's frontier including MT, WY, and Dakota Territories. Back end papers depict the layout of "Huffman's Milestown" later called Miles City. #31 of the 100 Best Books about MT and #40 Best books about MT, 2001 Edition. Nice copies in decent DJs are getting hard to find!

The famous western artist could tell a good story and they are gathered here in his original words. There are many books about Russell but this book contains his written stories. one of the most desired Russell books and well deserving of its reputation. #6 of the 100 Best books about MT. See Yost & Renner # 41, page 21. Dobie says--"...a collection of range stories." Nice Copies are getting hard to find!
